Abstract

When the topic of representativeness is approach, we talk about the struggle to show that there are different groups of people and for space for them in the mainstream media, in this way it is possible to produce possibilities and empowerment for all. During most of cinema, women received unworthy representations of their reality and personality, most of times representing secondary characters with no relevance to the plot or protagonists based on stereotypes. So, the following research objective is defined: Understanding the importance of female representations in cinema and how this can affect the process of identity formation using the Oscar´s, a film award, as example. In order to obtain an answer, was used the frequency analysis method in the nominees for best picture in the last ten years of the award, through the Bechdel test, which evaluates the female representation in films through three criterion, I) to have at least two named female characters; II) the two characters must talk to each other; and III) this conversation cannot have a man as the main focus of the conversation, for a film to be considered approved, it must contemplate all these categories. Through this, it was possible to verify that of the 85 films analyzed, 52 were approved in the test and 33 failed, with 20 failing to contemplate only one category of the test, 8 two categories and 5 did not contemplate any of the requirements.
